What Are You Doing For Halloween?

I’m starting to wonder what we’ll be doing come next Halloween.  For the past few years, we’ve always done stuff with the kids, and handed out trick and treats for the little ones that come ringing our doorbell.  But, not that our little ones are no longer interested in going door to door, I’m think it may be fun to have a bit more of an adult Halloween get together.  Sure, we can still put out the Halloween decorations for our visitors, but it also might be fun to have a bit of a party at the same time.  Maybe invite some good friends over for a bit of dress up fun.  It would be kind of cool to decorate the backyard up a bit (weather permitting) and have a really good time.

Maybe, even go a little more extreme with the decorations and entertain the kids and adults in the process.  Perhaps a little haunted house kind of thing that would be fun for everyone.  Letting everyone participate in the handing out of the treats could make it interesting.  Especially considering some of the friends that I have.  Whatever I decide to do, I still have a bit of time to think about it.  But that’s kind of a good thing, as it gives me time to both procrastinate a bit, plan an bit, and eventually come up with the coolest Halloween festivities ever.

Buy an Antique Oak Sideboard for a Classy Vintage Look

What is an Antique Sideboard?
Did you know that an antique oak sideboard was a common item of furniture in the 1700’s in middle class homes? These sideboards usually had six legs, which came in different shapes and was such a versatile feature for any home those days. It could be used in any room in the house, even in the bathroom or used as a display cupboard in the hallway. The sideboard was an ingenious item of furniture created as a means of saving space. The design of the sideboard kept on improving with more and more a space being provided to store such things as cutlery, and other kitchen equipment. It was much later that the backboard was added with a mirror incorporated into the design.

The Purpose of an Oak Sideboard
Antique oak sideboards are much sought after pieces of furniture even now, due to its multiple uses in the home. Apart from its value and the look of vintage elegance, it gives to any house; the sideboard is normally used to place drinks and desserts for the guests to serve themselves. Oak being one of the strongest woods available, anyone who owns a sideboard made of oak will be happy to know that it’s a wood that becomes distressed as time passes and appears even more beautiful with the age and long use. Those who have had antique oak sideboards passed down from generation to generation will definitely know the value of them. Those who have modern homes with contemporary furniture need not hide these beautiful pieces away because they can be converted into modern style dressing tables or even as a TV cabinet to be kept in the bedroom.

Tips on buying an Antique Sideboard
If you like the look of the antique oak sideboard and hope to buy one, do not be hasty. Check the unit for any damage and termite attacks. Be sure to open all drawers and look well under sideboards and mirror to see if there’s any brown sand like stuff anywhere in the unit, because if there is, it means termites have started to invade the wood. It is always wiser to get a professional in antiques and wood to check your sideboard to have it confirmed as an antique and not made to look like one. If you are buying your piece of furniture from a reputed vendor, don’t forget to ask for documents authenticating your purchase with details regarding its age and history.

Towel Bar Styles To Match Your Bathroom Décor

There are many ways to spice up your bathroom a little without spending too much money. One particularly simple option is to pick up a stylish towel bar that matches the rest of you decor from a company such as Murray Feiss, Kohler, Baldwin and Gatco.

I’ve come up with a couple of towel bar options that might be suitable for your needs. Here they are:

1. Vintage Style Pyrex Glass Towel Bar by Sunrise Specialty

It’s considered vintage, but seems more futuristic when you see it – the Pyrex glass bar for towels is transparent except for the accents where it’s mounted that can be a variety of finishes like the usual chrome style or an antique brass or bronze. It also looks funky sleek in the modern brushed nickel finish, especially if the rest of the fixtures and lighting is the same. It depends where you buy these rods, but they cost under $100 for most, some are just over $70. Vintage Tub and Bath offer good prices if shopping online.

2. Heated Towel Bar Styles By Warmrails and Amba Jeeves

The best designs seem to be the lightweight coated aluminum ones that are under $150 and are adjustable and really practical heated towel bar designs even for small spaces. Warm your towels, dry them when they’re wet, keep the bathroom fresh and dry…..and best of all, get out of the tub or shower to a cozy, warm towel to wrap yourself into.

The most expensive heated racks are like the ones in hotels and spas and are made by Amba…in their Jeeves collection….which has really expensive rack/bar models for over $600, which I think is toooo much, but they also have some simple ones that are more practical, in chrome and brushed nickel, costing under $250, still expensive, but they are nicely made units.
